Celebrities and their love for hardwood flooring

Celebs like Kim Kardashian, Matthew McConaughey, Nicholas Cage and Raquel Welch have all indulged their love of hardwood flooring.  They have all recently either bought or sold a property, but the common denominator across the board is that each and every one of these celebs has wood flooring installed in their home.

According to a report carried out by the National Flooring Association, 90% of estate agents have said that homes with oak flooring sell quicker, and secure a higher asking price compared to homes with carpeted flooring or other types of flooring.

The natural beauty, hardwearing properties, warmth and neutrality of real wood floors have made it the preferred choice of flooring for many celebrity homes, as well as most other residents of the US.

‘In our recent survey of 1,000 homeowners, 79% of respondents had hardwood floors,’ said chief marketing officer of a leading manufacturer of floor care products.  The reasons solid oak flooring is such a popular choice of flooring is as follows; it is easy to clean and maintain- hardwood requires minimal care to maintain its elegant look. Just a little sweeping and hovering is all that it takes to keep it looking at its very best.

Natural oak flooring is also cleaner and more hygienic than other types of flooring, as there is no where for dust, grime and allergens to get embedded. This reduces the chances of dust mites from breeding, creating a healthier home environment.  This type of flooring is also extremely hardwearing, and with the right care and maintenance can last for up to hundreds of years, making it a worthwhile investment in your home. Finally, there are also a wide range of shades and grains of hardwood to choose from, there’s bound to be one which suits your home’s décor. There are also a wide number of stains, varnishes and other finishes, allowing you to create the perfect floor for your home.

Engineered wood flooring best to use with underfloor heating

Wood flooring experts have declared that the best choice of solid wood flooring to lay over underfloor heating is engineered wood flooring.  This is because the engineered wood allows heat to enter into the room, through the flooring from the floor heating system.

This is because engineered wood flooring is stronger and offers greater stability compared to standard oak wood flooring, which is more prone to expand and contract because of the changing temperatures beneath the floorboards.

Expert floor fitters have warned that laying oak flooring over the top of underfloor heating needs to be done slightly differently however to when fitting wood floors over normal floorboards. You will need to use much more thin flooring underlay, as this will help to allow the heat to circulate properly, as well as to create an even surface. The flooring underlay will also serve as insulation, which effectively reduces the amount of sound made.

Despite the hardwearing nature of this type of wood flooring it is still very important when you lay wood flooring laid over underfloor heating to only increase the temperature of the heat slowly, due to the sensitivity of the wood to temperature change.

Make over your home for spring by laying solid oak flooring

Spring has almost arrived, meaning that it’s time to re-vamp your home. Now the winter weather has gone it’s the perfect time to think about laying solid oak flooring for a fresh new look.

It’s that time again when the days are starting to get lighter, daffodils are poking their heads above ground and the first sign of blossom is starting to appear on the trees.  Not only does this signal that it’s time to leave your big winter coat and heavy boots at home, it also means that it’s time to brighten up and lighten up your home too. You can change the whole look and feel of your home simply by introducing some new textures, colours and accessories.
Here are our top tips for making over your home in time for Spring!

  1. Evaluate your home’s floors; tatty carpets and shaggy rugs might look homely and feel warm underfoot during the winter months but summer calls for a sleeker, more modern look. Solid oak floor or hardwood flooring can really help to streamline your home, making the space feel far more spacious and uncluttered. Lightly coloured oak flooring is a perfect choice for the summer months.
  2. Take down any heavy drapes and curtains and replace them with light coloured curtains. Make sure that these are lined however if you want to keep the early morning sunshine out. Light wooden or bamboo blinds also make a contemporary alternative to curtains.
  3. The bright summer sunshine will show up any stains on your walls, so thoroughly clean any stains. Any which won’t budge consider painting over with a sea blue, or a peachy tone. Add some cushions in a complimentary tone to bring out the colour of your freshly painted wall.  Dark furniture can also look dingy in the summer months; you can strip the colour using some sandpaper to lighten the colour, or you could paint it a lighter colour all together.

Hardwood flooring needn’t be a hard decision to make

Hardwood flooring is an attractive and durable choice of flooring, which can potentially add a significant amount of monetary value to your home.  Like decorating the rest of your home, choosing the style and colour of wood flooring will usually depend on your personal preferences and tastes.

As there is such a wide choice of wooden flooring available it can sometimes be a tough decision to make choosing between the different styles, patterns, woods and finishes.

To make this choice easier you might want to take into account the other elements and features within your house too, as this can sometimes make choosing the right shade and finish of wooden floor much simpler.  It’s also important to think which type of wood floors will complement your already existing home décor.

When considering which hardwood will have the greatest visual impact it’s advisable to survey the space you plan to re-floor, and think through what effect you hope to achieve in doing so.

The majority of hardwood floors create a warm feel to your home, but lighter wood tones create a very different feel to dark wooden floors. Woods in dark tones can make your home seem smaller, and in some rooms can have a claustrophobic effect when you walk into them.

However, if you have large spacious rooms which you want to make feel homelier and cosier without filling them with furniture, dark wood hardwood flooring is an ideal choice.  Likewise, if you want your home to appear more spacious lighter tones of hardwood flooring will be a better choice of wooden flooring.

To help make your decision easier, many hardwood flooring companies offer potential customers samples of their wood floors. Laying a sample piece of hardwood flooring down in your home can help you gain a better idea of how it will look if the whole floor was to be laid in this type of hardwood.

Hold the hardwood samples near any furniture, the walls, and even your soft furnishings to see if the colours complement each other.  You should also carry this out at different times of the day as the light will be different in the morning and evening, so your room will look different.

Compare your favourite hardwood samples to the rest of the flooring in your home, especially floors in any adjoining hallways or bathrooms that will lie next to the new wooden floor. Think about the design of your home and how the new hardwood flooring will complement or clash with your existing themes.

Once you have almost made a decision as to which type of wooden flooring you want to lay in your home, discuss with the flooring company any stains and finishes that can be added to personalise your wooden flooring.  While some wooden floors are pre-finished, some types of hardwood floor can be adjusted to your specific requirements.

Reasons to choose hardwood flooring for your home

When choosing flooring for your home, it is quite a big decision to make as it can make a significant difference to the look and feel to your home. It can also make a big difference to your day-to-day life too, and you will need to carefully consider your needs before making your final decision.

Do you want a floor that’s quick and easy to clean? Won’t trap dust and dirt? If your answer is yes to both of the above (and let’s face it who really has the time to clean their floor on a daily basis?) The answer could be that hardwood flooring may be the best flooring solution for your needs.

Here are the top reasons to lay wooden floors in your home:

Wood floors are a durable and hardwearing alternative to laminated flooring. They also absorb sound much better compared to laminate,  add more value to your home, and can be installed into rooms where there is moisture without the risk of warping and buckling.

Wood flooring can be personalised, unlike carpet or laminate flooring so can complement your home much better compared to other run of the mill flooring options.  You can design your own floor by mixing different woods together. And if you want to revamp the look of your home you can; simply sand it down and re-stain should you wish.

Hardwood flooring is a much healthier choice of floor than carpet. This is because dust mites, fleas and other parasites can’t get trapped amongst the fibres. Hard wood floors are also easier to clean, allowing you to remove all traces of dust, which helps to alleviate common respiratory problems.

Real hard wood flooring may seem like an expensive option when it is installed but on average they last for longer than carpets and laminate. They also add value to your property, so when you sell your home you can recoup some of the cost.

Daily wear can ruin a carpet or laminate floor, however a solid wooden floor will last for years and years if you look after it properly.
