Choose solid oak flooring for your summerhouse

With the summer months fast approaching, a wonderful addition to any home for children and grown ups alike is a summerhouse.  For children it gives them a space away from the main house in which to play, and for adults it can be a great place to escape to for peace and quiet, as well as to entertain.

Before building your summerhouse, whether you choose to do-it-yourself or call in an expert you will need to consider what type of flooring to have installed. There is a wide range of choice you can choose from; however to decide upon which one is the best choice for your home you’ll need to consider how you plan to use your summerhouse.

If you think the summerhouse will be for occasional use only, a cheaper flooring option may be the best choice for you- such as plywood or a basic plank floor which can then be given a waterproof seal.
Alternatively, if you think you will be using your summerhouse on a regular basis a hardwood floor such as solid oak flooring may be the best choice.  Not only do real wood floors provide a more hardwearing and durable surface, they also create an elegant and clutter free space in which you can relax and unwind.

However, to make sure your solid oak floor doesn’t become damaged and worn you will need to put an off-cut of carpet in the doorway to absorb any water or mud from peoples shoes.  You will also need to lay a rug on top of the natural oak flooring when you are using your summerhouse, as this will give your floor a protective layer. These can also be rolled up and stored inside the main house during the winter months, which prevents them from being ruined.

Avoid laminate and choose real wood floors to increase the value of your home

If you are planning on doing some home improvements over the upcoming bank holidays it pays to consider whether they will add value to your home or detract from the value of your home.  Here are the top home improvements which will devalue your home, so you can avoid making a costly mistake this year.
If you are planning on installing laminate flooring in your home you may want to think again. This synthetic flooring imitates wood or stone, and although it is a cheaper type of flooring material than wooden flooring, and it is cheaper to install than wood floors it can significantly lower the value of your home.
If you want to increase the value of your home by laying solid wood flooring  but don’t want to pay an extortionate amount for it Easy Step Flooring is the answer. Their excellent range of high quality, real wood floors are extremely competitively priced, making one of their solid oak floors an affordable addition to any home.
If you are planning on laying carpet in your home, you should carefully think this through too. Interior design experts warn than carpet can be extremely expensive, yet significantly devalue your home when you are trying to sell. Instead, install solid oak flooring throughout your home, put a runner up the stairs to reduce noise, and lay rugs in the rooms for warmth underfoot. A home with oak wood flooring creates a streamlined, uncluttered look which any potential purchasers simply love.
Finally, coloured bathroom fixtures are a no-no if you want to secure the highest asking price for your home.  Though the colour scheme may be to your particular preference, potential buyers may need/want to replace the entire bathroom suite because of that green sink.  When it comes to choosing your bathroom fixtures, play it safe and opt for muted shades and tones- such as white or cream and keep your finishes chrome. You can always add colourful bathroom mats, pictures and accessories for a colourful injection that won’t cost you thousands in the long term.

How to take care of solid oak flooring

Purchasing and installing solid oak flooring is a long term investment, and how to care for and maintain your wooden floor should not be made quickly.  To help preserve the beauty of your solid oak floor you should undertake a routine of regular maintenance which should incorporate cleaning and protecting the surface of the oak wood flooring  from moisture, wear and tear and scratches.

To do this, you will need to do more than sweeping and hoovering the natural oak flooring.  If you spill anything onto the hardwood wipe it up straight away using a soft cloth.  Some liquids can cause permanent damage to oak floor, ruining both its look and finish.

Flooring experts recommend that you clean your solid wood flooring once every week, if you choose to use a broom you will need to ensure that it has soft bristles- so as not to mark the wooden flooring.  If you use a hoover, you will need to check that it is safe to use on hardwood flooring and that it does not have beater bars as these can make dents on the surface of the floor.   It’s generally recommended that you use the brush floor attachment, or alternatively the bare floor attachment that usually comes with most vacuums.

If you are not sure what type of cleaning liquid to use to clean your floor, the supplier of your hardwood flooring will usually be able to recommend the best one for you to use that will not ruin the finish of your floor.  Some products can remove the stain and finish of your floor, and make it lose its lustrous shine.  With these simple tips you will be able to preserve and enjoy the beauty of your wooden floor for many years to come!

How to choose the right solid wood floor

Installing a wooden floor in your home will instantly add warmth and character said one leading interior designer. Wood flooring made from restored floorboards will add history to your home while wood floors comprised of new floorboards will provide a constant visual base when furniture changes in an open space.

With such wide choice of solid wood flooring available, it can be hard to make a decision as to which hardwood is right for you and your home.  A good place to start is your budget;
Real wood floors of any kind are an investment in your home, however often floors made from wide boards are more expensive than those made from narrow floorboards.  Experts advise that you should always choose a hardwood variety as these tend to be more hardwearing, and so will last longer than softer woods such as pine.
Natural oak flooring is one of the most popular choices of wood floor on the market at the moment. One of the main reasons for this is because this colour wood is neutral and compliments a wide range of decors.  Therefore, even if you fit a natural oak floor, and decide to change your décor this versatile choice of floor will still complement your home. Its also one of the easiest types of wood to stain and varnish, and is also one of the most environmentally friendly woods too.
Walnut oak flooring is a beautiful dark choice of wood, however this wood does scratch easily so is not ideal for floors which will be subjected to lots of wear and tear. It does however give any room a clean and modern look.
Beech flooring is harder than most choices of flooring, but it has a higher risk of being damaged by water and warping. It is a light toned wood, so helps to make rooms to appear bigger and brighter than they really are.
Cherry flooring is an exotic choice of imported hardwood flooring. It is a dark red colour, which over the years and with exposure to light will naturally become darker when it becomes a burnt auburn shade. It will add warmth to any room in your home.

The reasons to let a pro lay your wooden flooring

If you are considering replacing your old carpets and laminate flooring with wooden flooring, you should be aware that it is not a job for someone who is inexperienced in fitting wood flooring.

This is because most novices often overlook vital steps required for laying a smooth, even wooden floor- for example letting the wood acclimatise to the temperature of a home before laying it. If this step is not carried out, it could cause gaps to form between the planks of your new solid oak floor. Furthermore, if the hardwood is laid incorrectly, or the sub-surface is not flat it can cause the floor to become squeaky, or spaces may appear between the floorboards.

Recently, a news piece was broadcasted which detailed the cost of undertaking complex DIY tasks, without relevant experience.  People who had attempted to ‘do-it-yourself’ spent far more money putting their mistakes right, compared to if they had hired a professional to complete the job for them.

Furthermore, leaving the DIY to the professionals is far more convenient and relaxing for homeowners, than trying to get the job done yourself. Not only do DIY’ers not have the skills and experience to complete a professional looking job, but they may also not have the right tools for the job- which is an expense that many fail to factor in.

At Easy Step Flooring, not only do they supply only the highest quality real wood floors, but they also have a team of fully trained, floor fitters to install them for you- so you don’t have to worry about the task of fitting your new wooden floor!

By choosing a professional to lay your solid oak flooring, you know that you significantly reduce your chances of experiencing any problems with your new floor- so no squeaky floorboards and no gaps between the planks for you!
